Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club November 2011 Chapter Meeting

Tonight’s chapter began with an inspirited table topic debate session.

Our first debate was started off on whether Singaporeans are a resonsible bunch of people.

Next, the speakers discussed whether our youths today are responsible or just simply taking things for granted.

Our next topic had strong views from both sides as they drew from their experiences on how our education has(or not) prepared our students for the working life.

The prepared speeches for the evening also added to the inspiritment of the evening.

Bilson gave his Project two speech about selling skills.

Cheryl talked about a common phenomenon around us - our little mobile world, where everything around us is becoming second to our mobile phones.

As for his Project seven, Joel prepared an introduction to why we should invest in the stock market.

Ming Hwee once again proved to be a wonderful humorist with her AP3.

Tonight’s awards went to the following toastmasters:

Best Table topic speaker - Lay Hong

Best Prepared speech speaker - Cheryl Loo

Best Evaluator - Kelvin Thiang

See you in December!

Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club October 2011 Chapter Meeting

What better way to start the holiday season(it’s never too early to start) by giving a short introducing of ourselves and our holiday plans. WIth so many people going overseas - from as near to Malaysia to as far as India and New Zealand - it certainly is a well deserved break from this roller coaster year of elections and market turmoil.

We inaugurated three new members: Cheryl, Bilson and Joel.

Just before Cheryl had a chance to rest from the new members oath taking, she was already giving her Project 4 speech about our garden city, and proudly declared Botanical Gardens to be the best park in Singapore.

Mark got comfortable with visual aids as he showed us his DIKW model for his Project 8 Speech.

Ming Hwee extoled the virtue of slow and stead wins the race, with her story of the bamboo and the fern tree.

Seh Leng shared on the leader excellence series, this time focusing on the visionary leader.

Yen Yuen gave some tips and pointers on how to evaluate effectively, a much practised skill in Toastmasters.

The Award winners for tonight were:

Best Table Prepared Speech Speaker - Tie between Cheryl Loo and Wee Ming Hwee

Best Evaluator - Chay Wen Liang

See you in November!

Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club July 2011 Chapter Meeting

We kicked off the chapter meeting with table topics. As National day was around the corner, Jocelyn asked the speakers to touch on Singapore’s icons and landmarks. Mark enjoyed the Singapore Zoo, while Denny, first time guest here at our club, commented it was well worth paying $20 for a view of Marina Bay at the rooftop of Marina Bay Sands. Bilson’s topic needed no introduction as he briefly described one of our favourite places, the heartlands’ hawker centres. Hwee Suan then proceeded to promote Orchard Road, where you can shop till you drop. She estimated that it’s at least a ten kilometre stretch of shopping haven! Cheryl talked about our very own shining durian, the Esplanade. Iconic in comparison with the Merlion.  To top it off, Jesse shared that the opening up of Tanjong Pagar Railway Station created new green spaces which drew huge public interest. He advised to visit now before it closes.

Tonight, we took the time to thank all our Executive Committee Members and Advisors 2010/2011. Their passion has been evident as we once again, clinched the President’s distinguished club award.

New Club Executive Committee Members
A new chapter has begun, and with the following new executive Committee to carry on the race:

President : Low Lay Hong, CC, CL
VP-Education: Lee Shui Sing, CC / Joseph Ngo
VP-Membership: Jocelyn Goi, CC / Tang Hwee Suan
VP-Public Relations: Joel Ng
Secretary: Tan Kim Siong, CC
Treasurer: Ho Yen Yuen, ACB, CL
Sargeant at Arms: Tan Yong Wei
Immediate Past President: Ho Yen Yuen, ACB, CL

“Can we do it again?”, Lay Hong, our incoming Club President threw the challenge. Success of the club depends on the contributions of the club members. Not forgetting the hard work behind the scenes of our executive committee members in ensuring every chapter meeting and project night is successful and enjoyable.

Prepared Speeches
Francy Nguyen got personal by asking us about our dreams in her Project 3 speech.

Hwee Suan serenaded us to not worry and just be happy in her Project 3 speech.

If money is not enough, remember to focus on what we have in our hands and be happy as Joel presented in his Project 5 speech.

Music is in the air, as Mark whipped out his guitar and played some tunes for us in his Project 5 speech.

Summary of our ribbon winners for tonight:
Best Prepared speech: Hwee Suan
Best Project Evaluator: Rebecca Lee, DTM
Best Table Topic speaker: Cheryl

Overall evaluation
Better late than never, but Kim Siong encouraged members to be early if help is required.

Wiith the closing remarks by our Madam President, it was an eventful night of new beginnings.

Until next time, be happy while you chase your dreams. When money just isn’t enough, sing your heart out. See you.

Gong Xi Fa Cai on 1 Feb 2011

It was a glorious meeting.
The evening started with the playing of Chinese New Year Songs, in Chinese of course, to set the atmosphere.
True to the spirit of Chinese New Year, there was abundance in the meeting. Abundance in the richness of the
speech content by the prepared speech speakers Low Lay Hong, Lee Shui Sing, Ng Diing Yaw, Tan Kim Siong and our
club president Ho Yen Yuen. Abundance in our lovely Yu Sheng refreshment spread lovingly prepared by our feisty
VPE Jocelyn Goi. And abundance in the generous sharing by our evaluators Wee Ming Hwee, Jacky Ha, Kenneth Oh, Tracie Peh and Clara Tan
and the LE for that evening Goh Sor Hoon. Thank you all for making the evening so memorable.

What’s New at the Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club Meeting on 4 January 2011?

Yes, apart from learning the word “New”, from the language evaluator, Wee Ming Hwee, whose attempt as a Language Evaluator at her home club, was also new. We also had a new member, Mark Goh who delivered his maiden speech – “The Ice-breaker” which enticed the audience with his humor and alluring speaking style.

What could you do to overcome the fear of speaking in front of an audience? What could you do to overcome the jitters and let the butterflies in your stomach fly out your words with flow and fluency? Our club president, Ho Yen Yuen had the secrets which she shared openly with the audience with no reservation and wits.

Chen Yuyuan’s speech on setting goals and making and keeping to our new year resolutions was both enlightening and thought-provoking.

Our project evaluators were equally competent and offered invaluable recommendations which value-add much to our members’ speech presentations.  Not to forget, our General Evaluator, Sophie Tan who conscientiously observe the meeting procession and had relentlessly shared her views for the improvement of our future club meetings. Kudos to all our invited toastmasters friends.

The meeting ended in a light but totally engaging mood.

December 7, 2010 Chapter Meeting

It was a night worth waiting for! What a propitious way to end the year!

Apart from our members, the room was filled with Club Presidents and contest winners, all of whom are great project and language evaluators, as well as our wonderful guests. The meeting was so highly charged that laughter could be heard from the start till the end of the meeting.

Our SAA, Clara Tan, kick-started the meeting by having us introduce ourselves and sharing with one another our plans for Christmas.

Toastmaster of the Evening, Seh Leng, awe us with her use of language throughout the evening and left us all inspired to know more about the Language Evaluation workshop that will be held on 8 January 2011.

Our first speaker for the night, Francy, was such a great speaker that we almost forgotten that this was her maiden speech. Our little rabbit girl, who hails from Vietnam, shared with us the origins of her name as well as her dreams of opening a Vietnamese restaurant in Singapore.

Shui Sing shared with us how forgetful he was. Luckily, he didn’t forget his speech and we learned how important it is to be patient.

Jocelyn persuaded everyone to volunteer their time and money, not just for others, but for themselves too. She shared on the benefits of giving and reminded us to give our donations before 31 December to enjoy higher tax deduction.

Ming Hwee, our immediate past Club President, is happy to acknowledge all kinds of variations to her name. Indeed, she really lives up to her name and leading a Wonderful, Meaningful and Happy life!

Our great project evaluators, Kelvin Thiang, Coen Tan, Edwin Por and Linda Lam were so inspiring and experienced. Thank you to their wonderful project evaluations and valuable tips on how to make our speeches better.

John Sih was fabulous when he gave us his timers report, together with a short summary of our speeches.

After the refreshment break, our “Santa Claus”, Jocelyn Goi, took over the control of the lectern and invited the members and guest to give an impromptu speech on topics relating to the year end and festive seasons.

After all the actions, it’s time for the results.

Joni Siah gave us a brilliant SSS evaluation of the use of the language. Her speech was so educational and entertaining.

Next was the Ah Counter’s report. Thanks to Yuyuan who so painstakingly recorded all our pause- fillers. Three cheers for Linda, John and Ming Hwee who emerged to have achieved zero pause fillers in their speeches.

The meeting ended with the awards presentation with the winners being Ming Hwee (best project speaker), Coen (best evaluator) and John (best table topic speaker).

Special thanks to our club’s Sergeant-At-Arms, Tan Kim Siong, for preparing the delicious food.

It was a great night of learning, fun and laughter. We all enjoyed it very much and look forward to the next meeting on 4th Jan 2011.

Till then, see you.

The take away message for the night is:

Take control of your life by not having situations around you affect your Life;

Take a positive mindset towards life in that it’s your attitude that will determine your altitude; and

Live life with gratitude.

Do not ask Why? Ask Why not! When Life throws you Lemons, Make Lemonade!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

November 2, 2010 Chapter Meeting

The meeting started off with a round of introduction lead by Sergaent-At-Arms, Tan Kim Siong, on our favourite holiday destination to date. We had Japan trips, Europe Honeymoon, Iceland & Phuket get-aways amongst some of the memorable trips.

There was an amazing turnout of our wonderful guests and visiting Toastmasters that enriched and excited the night's Meeting.

Toastmaster of the evening, Wee Ming Hwee, kick start the meeting proper with our P3 Speaker, Lee Shui Sing on his project speech on "Why he joined Toastmasters" gave our guests some insights to what he gained in his journey over the last year.

AP1 Specialty Speech by our new member, Chen Yuyuan spoke on a project speech that requires no preparation, hence we coined it as a "very long, 5 to 7 minutes Table Topics".

AP3 Speaking To Inform Speech by our Club Presentation on her "Demonstration Talk" taught us how to do Origami by demonstrating how to fold a paper box.

We would like to thank Visiting Toastmasters, Tan Boon Chye, Wong Kok Wah and Patrick Sehoo, for taking time to evaluate our speakers for the night.

Michael Wee, DTM, impassioned Language Evaluation corrected us on the better usage of our English Language.

Guests also had a great time at Table Topics, with Topics selected by our Table Topics Master, Clara Tan, asking volunteers to speak on their views & opinions on one trait of a typical Singaporean what in their opinion is "Uniquely Singaporean"

We had an enjoyable meeting and the message for the evening was: "TODAY is YESTERDAY's TOMORROW" Don't wait till tomorrow to do the things you can do today. Do it NOW

"5th Oct 2010

It was a lovely evening kicked off by the SAA, Ming Hwee who asked everyone to share their thoughts on:

"Why do you like Toastmaster?"

Positive vibes were hence generated to gear everyone up for the rest of the meeting.

Applause to Kim Siong who did a marvelous job in being a TME for his very first time despite given a short notice of just 3 days ahead of the meeting!

We were fortunate to have 3 visiting toastmasters with us who gracefully took on the appointments as evaluators & allowed our members to learn from them when they spoke with much poise & energy.

Thanks to Bruno, Lee Min & Guan Hau!

Bruno won our hearts to emerge as the BEST EVALUATOR & BEST TABLE TOPIC SPEAKER with his light hearted humor & polished style of speaking.

Our first time guest: Dong Ting enjoyed the meeting & was involved as a timer to keep all of us on time! Hope we could invite him back again as a member in future!

We've 4 members who did their projects tonight & we all learned a whole new insight from them:

Diing Yaw tickled the audience with his speech on "Why do younger guys prefer older women?".

Jocelyn taught us to be safer drivers on the roads so as not to be sorry!

Yen Yuen was eager to share about how to be well-liked & was thoughtful to make summary cards for us.

Lay Hong won the BEST SPEAKER award with her confident & collected demonstration of how to present an award in a special occasion! (no pause fillers noted, wow!)

Lastly, thanks to all for the enthusiastic participants in the table topics set by Shui Sing who was also took up the challenge for the first time as the Table Topics Master for the exciting segment of the evening! Well done!

We heard interesting ideas in dealing with ticklish situations that flipped our minds.

Till the next meeting on 2/11/10!   "

6-Apr-2010

Ulu Pandan Toastmaster Chapter meeting.

The meeting was well started by Seh Leng as the Toastmaster of the evening.

Ming Hwee began the Chapter Meeting by reminding us the importance of the Club's DCP goals. The excitement kicked start with Iron man - Kalvin, to share the soft side of his love & memory to his late mother.

Work life balance can never be easy! Thomas shared with us the tips on how to manage & balance between our work life & personal life.

Storytelling time, the relax moment for the audience began with romance of the boy-girl relationship by Faizah. How about a bedtime story for the races between the rabbit & the tortoise by Cheep Lee? It was the exciting snake fight in Jocelyn's childhood to capture the heart of the audience to win her the best prepared speech speaker of the evening.

‘The Food’ was the follow up with table topics as desserts from Kim Siong. Dorothy, Yen Yuen, Lay Hong & Steven had  certainly dribble us with Chicken wings, PoPiah & err..Bats. Perhaps the Bats wasn’t tasted as bad with the long unusual bone that won Steven (guest of the evening) with the best table topic speaker. Guess some of us might want to try it once on how does it taste like!

The enriching evening cannot be conducted without the effort from the project evaluators, appointment holders & the guests.

Dorothy, on her timer role, was keeping everybody on-time to allow Eng Sing to manage the entire meeting schedule flowing smoothly & accordingly.

Lay Hong to meticulously listened for repeated words/sentences as Ah-counter role & not to forget Yen Yuen, who given out gummy candy as token on her maiden language evaluator role.

Thanks to all the project evaluators to help the project speakers -  Ming Hwee, Hung Khoon, Clara, Daniel, Leela, Lye Sum.

It was indeed a memorable evening for the participants & audience!

Dear members of Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club,

Thank you for participating and supporting our chapter meeting yesterday! It was indeed a tremendous challenge for us to keep track of the timing.

I believe the meeting left us with FOND memories from ‘how to drive safely’, ‘select the right present’, ‘the importance of exercise’ to ‘how to put your New Year resolutions into action’! The evaluators helped us to become a better speaker by being ‘good’ to us instead ‘nice’. Perhaps I was stumbled and fumbled by the ‘door close’, yet, it has ‘open up the door to room of improvements’! (Hope I didn’t missed out any of your speech title, did I?)

Let us also give a loud applause to Si Lin for her marvelous maiden TME attempt! Not forgetting the other dedicated meeting appointment holders: Shui Sing – SAA, Thomas – Timer, Kevin - Ah-Counter, and Diing Yaw – Table Topics Master. Thank you!

Special thanks to Jocelyn for spreading the joy of Chinese New Year. The Yu Seng taste was fantastic! Hopefully our club will flourish and prosper to another height with the up-beating tossing of 'Lo Hei'!

for the evening with his well prepared maiden speech. Visiting toastmasters

Singapore while Doana won the hearts of the audience with her vivid
demonstration of vocal variety and clinched the best speaker award for the
    evening.

Of course the first chapter meeting in the year of the ox is incomplete without
"Lo Hei". Our members and guests had a roaring good time tossing the
"Yu Sheng". After the auspicious dish, we adjourned to the evaluation
segment. We would like to thank all our evaluators for giving our speakers
constructive feedbacks and all other visiting toastmasters and guests for their
    time and help.

  • 16 November 2008 : It was an evening filled with enthusiasm, entertainment, and enticement (the
home-cooked dinner was a big draw). Once again, our invited guest has raised
the bar for conducting the table topics session in a refreshing and
challenging way. This has made our table topics session the most exciting
segment of our chapter meeting with surprises in store at every chapter
meeting. So, members, invited guests, and potential members, do not miss out
    on our future chapter meetings.

  • 14 October 2008 : At our chapter meeting on 7 October, members and guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner prepared by our club president and treasurer. Of course, dinner is incomplete
without our signature dish - pizza! Having satisfied our hunger, we proceeded to satisfy our
    intellectual craving.

We welcomed a new member Doana Tan who confidently delivered her maiden speech and
gained much praise from her evaluator and all present.
The table topics session was conducted in a refreshing way by our guest Coen Tan. He had all table topic speakers acting as auntie/uncle/sister/ms agony, dishing out advice to the chosen problems. For this meeting, we had a general evaluator Esther Lim ACB who gave very constructive feedbacks on the general proceedings of the meetings and to all appointment holders. With these feedbacks in mind, we hope to do better in future meetings.

  • 10 August 2008 : The August chapter meeting was a fun-filled session full of humour and
intellectual stimulation. The richness of language used by our speakers
intrigued everyone present. Our language evaluator, DTM Rebecca Lee stumped
most of the toastmasters by introducing a lesser known word, urbane.
Nevertheless, a number of toastmasters urbanely sprinkled their speeches
with the word of the day.

There was also a surprise item planned. The surprise was so carefully
guarded that no one knew what it was till the TME announced the item as it
was not highlighted in the program - Our member, Farida Mustanir gave a
surprise farewell speech as she's relocating to Dubai in the middle of
    August.

Our Ah Counter, CC Mohd Saddiqi, gave the Ah Counter report in a very

  • 13 Jan 2008 : 8th January 2008, the date that ULU Pandan Toastmasters Club had
its inaugural chapter meeting for the year 2008. It was off to a great
start! Not only did we have a long and exciting list of speakers but we
also had an equally long and distinguished list of visiting toastmasters.
Besides the very formal introduction round required of every meeting, this
time the Toastmaster of the Evening(TME) threw open a beginning of a story
to the meeting. Each person had to contribute a line or two to continue the
story. The story took many turns and twist and it was hilarious to see how
it ended. Feedback on such wake-me up activities were good! So future TMEs,
please remember to include similar acitivities. Our speakers presented a
range of varied topics which most certainly made for an interesting evening.
Not to be outdone, the evaluators too made eloquent speeches to praise
their speakers and recommend areas of improvement. Our table topics segment
also saw our solo guest of the evening taking her first steps to public
speaking. The evening ended on a high note as the best speaker, best
evaluator and best table topics speaker were announced. It was a fitting
    start to the new year!

  • 4 Dec 2007 : The word of the day, "galvanize" recommended by the English evaluator, Joni
Siah, indeed set the tone for the evening. Our new member, Wong Loke Yeow,
did his best for his Ice Breaker Project and was in turn praised by his
evaluator, Mr Lee for his unique way of introducing himself to the
    attendees.

Farida Mustanir did her Project Ten and thus earned her the Competent
Communicator award with her captivating speech on "Margin".

The Ulu Pandan Toastmasters' Club would like to thank the following
evaluators for their time and contribution to the chapter meeting: Kelvin
Thiang, ATMB, CL, Esther Heng,CL, Stuart Ralls, and our Club Mentor, DTM

Clara Tan and Lim Seh Leng.

  • 18 Nov 2007 : It was a night of toasts to four speakers doing their Advanced Projects,
namely Lim Swee Jian, Eddie Ang, Li Ying, and Shabana Tyebally. More toasts
followed when two of them devoted their prepared speeches on the theme of the toast. It was
also a night of unexpected reunions -- Tan Teck Lee and Li Ying "reunited"
with our Chapter Meeting after a period of absence and Low Lay Hong met her
secondary school classmate, April Tan, (who was our evaluator), after a period of 20
    years.

We take this opportunity to induct our new member,

the "yen and the zen" for more sharing, knowledge and networking. The
Meeting also saw 2 evaluators who are champion speakers themselves, thus
lending themselves the "yen" for providing valuable feedbacks.

The meeting was opened by our recently inaugurated president Ms Lim Swe Jian, who opened the meeting with a wonderful speech recalling her childhood days and the lessons that were learnt along the way. Although a first time, our Toastmasters of the Evening carried herself well and smoothly co-ordinated the meeting. We had a good round of presentations from our junior toastmasters who were doing their project 3 and project 5 speeches while one toastmaster was on her way to completing her project 9 speech. Our guests for the nights, Tan Meow Hui from Tampines West, John Choi from Radin Mas, Wong Kok Wah from Brilliant Advanced added to the stimulating and cheery evening. They came to lend their experience and weight to either provide the word for the day, evaluate or dare us with mind challenging table topics or simply support the Ulu Pandan Toastmasters. All in all, it was a good evening with everyone accomplishing their roles to the nines. Looking forward to our Humorous Contest on 4 September. Hope to see you there!

  • 9 July 2007 : It was an evening that Lim Swee Jian CC and Eddie Ang CC should treasure its moment: the former was formally installed as the President of the Club for the new term

It was indeed an evening well spent with well prepared and inspiring speeches. That evening, we also discovered a hidden talent amongst our midst - our very own relaxation mistress, Farida Mustansir who took us through a set of body movements to unwind the day's worries and tension. To all our project and language evaluators from NUS, Singapore Polytechnic, Braddell Heights, Dover and Tampines Regional Library, you have been simply superb ! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To all members, thank you for your spontaneous participation. You have all been wonderful and have demonstrated the unique Ulu Pandan spirit of camaraderie.

  • 11 Jan 2007 : At the chapter meeting on 9 Jan 2007, we witnessed 3 "Firsts". First, our club had the honour to have our club mentor and friend, DTM Richard Sng deliver his enlightening project 7 speech. It was also the first time that our member Lay Hong attended our meeting after a long absence. She had this to say about the meeting : "After an absence of 3 months, it was good to be back to witness a roomful of dynamic people delivering dynamic speeches and evaluations. It was indeed a dynamic start to a dynamic year ahead." We had our first new member of the year, Mandar Salunkhe, who joined our club that night after dropping by for the first time. Welcome aboard Mandar!

  • 22 Dec 2006 : First of all, we would like to extend our warm welcome to our new member,

The words of the day, vitality, vigour and verve introduced by the Club Mentor, DTM Richard Sng, added spices to our language usage and liven up the whole atmosphere that was dampened by slight delay and inclement weather.

The lively session was further maintained by the enthusiasm injected by the four guests, namely, John Choi dishing out his table topics in an invitingly manner, Rebecca Lee delivering the best evaluation report of the evening, Patrick Chang ACB and Mindy Ding, both offering
their valuable and constructive suggestions to the speakers. We would like to thank them for their attendance and particularly for making the meeting a wonderful evening of learning, sharing and

On 8 Nov, we were invited to present a programme at a camp organised by the Ulu Pandan Citizens Consultative Committee Education and Welfare Subcommittee and the Youth Executive Committee for teens from Ulu Pandan. It is titled "I-CAN" for "I CAN COMMUNICATE, I CAN ACHIEVE, and I CAN BE NURTURED". It's purpose is to enable the teens to build their self-confidence and practise their communication skills.

  • 15 Nov 2006 : The Ulu Pandan November Toastmasters meeting was not an ordinary monthly
chapter meeting. It also signalled the start of our Speechcraft course over a period of 5 sessions. Besides our regular agenda, whereby our Ulu Pandan Toastmasters delivered their project speeches, the Speechcrafters were given a preview of the setting in which a toastmasters chapter meeting is held, the management and the organization of such a meeting whereby toastmasters are expected to take on various appointments. A total of 13 people enrolled for the Speechcraft course. During the fast and furious table topics round, Speechcrafters were invited to participate to get a first-hand feel of standing in front of a group of people and sharing their opinions on a chosen topic. The meeting ended on a high note as usual with feelings of accomplishment and camaraderie all round. We look forward to seeing our Speechcrafters in the subsequent sessions.

  • 5 Oct 2006 : Every chapter meeting is a mystery to all because we do not know what
awaits us. We had a fun English lesson by Pauline Lim CTM, the bubbly VPE of Choa Chu
    Kang TMC.

The guests were jovial and encouraging; our members had a wonderful
time interacting and sharing public speaking tips over break. It is with
much regret that many of our members were unable to turn up for the meeting.

Learning is a life long process and public speaking is no different.
The 3 hour session enables us to unwind after all the hard work in preparing for the meeting, to
measure our progress in public speaking and to evaluate our personal growth and improvement for the month.

We are pleased to announce that UPTMC is organizing a 5 session
Speechcraft Workshop in the month of November 2006. The workshop will be conducted by
our Club Mentor, DTM Richard Sng, who was the champion of both the Area S2 Humorous
Speech Contest as well as the Area S2 Evaluation Contest.

Fortunately, the meeting proceeded without a hitch. We are very grateful to visiting Toastmasters ATM-B/CL Rebecca Lee from Brilliant Advanced and Gabriel Chen Yong Chao from Alumni Toastmasters Clubs for broadening our horizons with their helpful and enlightening project evaluations.
